Abstract

315,458. Evans, F. C. April 13, 1928. Refuse - consuming furnaces. - Refuse is burnt in a series of parallel troughs 1 arranged below ground level and comprising supports 8 for removable grate sections 7 and surmounted by rails 4 for cover plates 5 which may be moved along the rails and packed one upon another when it is desired to feed refuse on to the grate. Air is supplied beneath the grate through pipes 28. A sunken way 14 is provided in front of the troughs into which a vehicle 15 may run and enter the troughs, after the grates and cover plates have been removed for the purpose of scooping up ashes. In a modification, the cover plates are hinged to one of the upper edges of the trough. The troughs communicate at the rear with a flue 11 leading to a chimney.
