Application filed September It is the purpose of the present inven` clined chute or passage for the fuel so located with respect tothe tire-bon as to direct the fuel onto the grate the entire heater adapted to he disposed within the tank (which `receives water) for heating the contents there of, the inclined chute or passage terminating at a point above the surface of the water.
Another purpose is to `provide a practical and relatively simple construction of heater of water, with: a cover on the upper end of the chute or passage which leads to the .lire-box, in conjunction with means for setting the cover in different positions to permit a draft to pass through the heater.
Still another purpose is to provide, `in a heater, a irebozr with a grate and a deflector adjacent one end of the grate which can be positioned to direct the fuel onto the grate or the draft under the grate. 1n other words, the detlector performs a douhle function.
lt is to he understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative and that, while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modifications of detail and desired proportions` may he made in the apparatus according to the circu1nstances.
r1`he invention comprises further features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
ln the dra-Wings: l
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view througha conventional constructioii of tank, showing it containing water to be heated, with the improved heater in section and mounted therein.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 yof Figure 1.
Figure t is a detail view showing a reinforcing plate to be used on the interior of the tire-box to brace a removable wall of the latter where pipes from the smolre box connect therewith.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a convention@l tank, which may be any size as. ieee. serial No. 59,314.
and shape, and 2 denotes a heater which comprises a liresboX 3, which may be any shape and size, including a chimney or smoke flue t rising therefrom. The heater also includes a tire-box 5 in the form of a casing G which may be any shape and size desired and the smoke boi: may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably sheet metal.
Une end of the lire-box has an upwardly inclined chute 7 which is tapered toward its upper end, the interior of the chute con* stituting a passage 8 leading to and comn'iunicating with the interior of the tirebor. itt suitable grate 9 on supports 10 is mounted within the tire-box. At one end of lthe grate and swingingly mounted upon the same hy means of a shaft 1l is a delector 12. rlhe grate being loosely mounted in the lire-box and carrying the deflcctor, the lat ter may swing to either of the two positions indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings. Then in the full line position, air is directed below the grate and through the fuel thereon to provide for the ready combustion of the latter. ln the ldot and dash line position, the deflector serves to direct onto the grate all fresh fuel with which the tire-box is charged.
The upper end of the chute is open but is provided with a closure or cover constitutingr a damper 15 vwhich is carried by the pivot rod 16 spanning the opposite walls at the upper end of the chute. The damper is marginally flanged, as at 17, so as to fit the upper end of the chute, and pivoted `at 18 is a toothed support 19. A rod 20 is mounted in the opposed walls of the -upper end `of the chute and is positioned so as to be engaged by the teeth of the support 19. lVlien the damper or cover is tilted upward, the toothed edge of the support rides over the rod and when the damper is raised to the desired position, the engagement of one of the teeth with the rod holds the damper in a raised position. As shown, the damper or cover is partly raised, which allows a slight draft to pass down through the chute and under the grate to percolate through the bed of the lire.
The products of combustion pass through the tubes or pipes 21. In the illustrated ein bodiment, nine tubes or pipes are shown of which live are in the top row and four in the bottom row. There may be as many used, however, as desired and they may be short or long or any length found to meet the requirements under Which the invention is used. l/Vhere they connect With the smoke boX, a casting 22 is employed through which the pipes are threaded. The casting 22 is in the form of a plate, and Washers are disposed on the front and rear faces of this plate and engaged by nuts 24 which serve to hold the Washers in position and insure a rigid connection of the pipes With the casting.
A cover plate 25 telescopes an open side of the smoke box, the cover plate being inarginally flanged at 26 to carry out such litting, the flange being secured detachably at 27 to the smoke box. This cover plate has an opening 28 to accommodate the inner Washers and nuts ,3 and 24. rlhe casting or plate 22 is secured by bolts 29 to the cover plate, there beingl a relatively heavy gasket 30 between Vthe casting plate and cover plate to prevent seeping of the Water into the smoke box. A reinforcing` plate 3l is located adjacent the inner surface of the cover plate and also receives the bolts 29, the reinforcing plate acting to brace the cover plate and render the saine more diirable as the cover plate is removable at times.V ln other Words, the removal of the cover plate permits access to the interior of the smoke box for cleaning the saine, and diie to the reinovability, the cover plate is subjected to considerable vvear and rough usage.
The other ends of the pipes or tubes 2l are threaded through a casting 32 which, in turn, is secured by bolts to a cover plate 34. The cover plate 34 is also marginally flanged, as at 35, to telescopically and detachably lit the open end of the lire-box. rIhe flange 35 of the cover plate 34 is secured to the ivall of the lire-box.
A relatively heavy gasket 37 is positioned between the casting 32 and the cover plate 311-, which has an opening through which the pipes or tubes 21 partially pass, and disposed adjacent the inner face of the cover plate 34 and also secured by the bolts 33 is a .reinforcing plate 38 Which is similar to the plate 3l, the saine being designed to brace the coverplate and to insure a rigid construction as well as rendering the plate more durable.
In use, the heater is placed within a suitable tank which is adapted to contain Water to be heated, then fuel is allowed to pass through the chute or passage, when the delectorl2 is disposed as in dot and dash lines, for the purpose of conveying the fuel to the fire-box. After the fire is lighted and thoroughly started, the. deflector may be dis-V posed as in full lines and thev damper or cover 15 adjusted to provide the proper draft. By this improved construction of heater, the Water in the tank can be easily and very quickly heated for use by live stock or the Water may be used Vfor other purposes. lWhen it is desired to clean the firebox, the grate is removed. The grate being loosely mounted in the lire-box, it may be Withdraivn through the chute portion 7 after shifting the damper to its full open position. Then the ashes and unburned fuel may be removed by a hoe or other implement, VWithdrawing it up the chute.
As a means for securing the device in the tank l, anchoring members are employed; These consist of bars 40 transversely spanning the iire-boX and the smoke boi; and engaged by the threaded extremities of eyebolts il which pass through the eyes in the bars and receive nuts 42 bearing` upon the top of the bars. The eyes i3 ofthe eye-bolts engage anchoring hooks 44 riveted or otherivisesecured to the bottom of the tank.
rlhe invention having been described, What is claimed is:
A heater for submersion in a Water tankcomprising spaced casings of which one. is provided with a fuel feed chute and the other With a smoke flue, the facing ends of said casings beingv provided with cover plates having castings mounted thereon, and tubes threadingly engaged with one casting and extended through the other and provided with nuts engaging the opposite faces thereof.
In testimony whereof he atlixes his signature.
