TANK HEATER.

SIMM/uhu UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
WALTER S. BRYSON, OF TURTLE LAKE, NORTH. DAKOTA.
TANK-HEATER.
Application led May 11, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER S. B RrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turtle Lake, in the county of McLean and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Tankl-leaters, of which the following 1s a speelcation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to water heaters, and more particularly to tank heaters of that type in which a combustion chamber having a flue is disposed within the tank itself.
The general object of this invention is to provide a tank heater of vthis character which is very effective, which is simply constructed, and which provides for a maximum contact of the water with the heater.
A further object is to provide a device of this character in which the grate of the combustion chamber is removable through the upper end of the combustion chamber, so that this grate may be removed either when charged with fuel or when empty, the removal of the grate making it a relatively easy matter to remove the vashes from beneath the grate.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a tank and heater constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the grate, the combustion chamber being shown in dotted lines.
Referring to these figures, 10 designates a water tank of any suitable construction having a cover 11 provided at one end with an opening 12 for the insertion of the tank heater.
This tank heater comprises a rectangular downwardly inclined portion 13 closed at its upper end by a hinged cover 14:, this cover having a draft opening 15. From the lower end of this portion 13 extends a horizontal transversely rectangular portion 16 having the same width as the portion 13 but less in height and extending parallel to the portion 16 is a flue 17 which is connected Specication of Letters Patent.

to the portion 16 by means of the bend or elbow 18. From the portion 17 extends an upwardly inclined iiue portion 19 which is not quite parallel to the portion 13 but inclined toward this portion so as to engage therewith vat the upper end, as at 19. This upwardly inclined portion 19 is then upwardly extended as at 2O to form a Hue or stack, this portion 20 being preferably round. The portion 19 has a relatively small width and thickness at its upper end and expands laterally downward so that its lower end has the same width as the portion 17, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be seen that a water space 21 is provided between the portions 17 and 19 and the portions 13 and 16 so that the water may circulate around the heater as a whole and also between the portions 13 and 16 and the flue sections 17 and 19.
Disposed within the combustion chamber 13 is a grate 22 disposed at an inclination to the portion 16 and supported on hangers 23 hooked at their upper ends to engage over the upper ends of the side walls of the combustion chamber 13. By means of these hangers the grate may be lowered into place or withdrawn and this whether the grate is charged with fuel or not. By withdrawing the grate access may be had to the portion 16 for the removal of ashes.
Preferably the heater is supported within the water tank on upwardly extending studs 24 so that water may circulate beneath the portion 16. The heater is intended to be so constructed that it may be removed as a unit from the tank and through the opening 12 therein or inserted through this opening.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination with a tank, of a heater therefor comprising a downwardly inclined combustion chamber, a horizontal portion extending from the combustion chamber and having a width equal thereto and upwardly extended' fat its outer end, a rearwardly extending flue portion having the same width as the combustion chamber but spaced therefrom, and an upwardly and rearwardly extending Hue portion gradually contracted toward its upper end and extended to a level with the upper end of the combustion chamber and engaging with the Wall of the. comthrough the Space between the horizontal hustion chamber' at this point but spaced portions ofthe heater. l0 from said Wall' for the remainder of its In testimony whereof I hereunto ax my length, and a Hue extending upward from signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
