Description

Feb. 20, 1923. mwzaz F. R. MACDONALD REFUSE DESTRUCTOB AND INCINERATOR Filed Nov. 5, 1921 w w H WWW WM IITT)".
Patented Feb. 209, 11923.
FRANCIS RANDOLPH IEEACDONALD, OE LONDON, ENGLAND.
Application filed November 5, 131,1. Serial No. 513,018.
.This invention. relates to refuse destructors and incinerators. I i I The object of this invention is to provide a refuse destructor which will deal with foecal and other matter even whencontaining a high percentage of water, with the assurance that no unburnt combustible material, including gases, can pass through the apparatus.
The refuse destructor made in accordance with this invention is characterized by the features set forth in the following claims and is exemplified by the following description.
The drawing filed herewith is a diagranr matic sectional elelvation of one form of refuse destructor made in accordance with this invention;
a is the casing, a is the hopper, 5 a lid to the hopper, c a tray forming the bottom portion of a drying chamber (Z, 6 a raking door, f a rake, g a sloping grating, h a level grating, j a clinker door, m an oil fuel burner, 7% a line, 0 an ash pit, 10 a door and g a baffle plate.
in use refuse is fed through the hopper a into the t'ay c to dry, and later raked over the edge of the tray onto the grating y where it is burnt and reduced to ash which falls into the pit 0. The hot gases from the burning refuse heat the drying chamber cl and pass out by way of the flue h in starting to work the incinerator, or when the refuse will not burn of its own itUl'Ol'tl or heat the drying chamber suiiiciently, the bums m, which heats both the grating 5 and iflrying chamber d, may be brought into operation. Incombustible material in the refuse will collect on the grating 7i and may be removed through the door j. Ash in the pit 0 is removed through the door 30.
No vapour escapes from the drying chamber into the atmosphere through cracks between the hopper a and its lid as continual current of air is drawn through such cracks by the burning material below and thus all vapour willbe sterilized by passing through the furnace before escaping to the atn iosphere. I
if desired the apparatus may be constructed of metal and mounted on wheels in a portable form, with casings and haflles of sheet metal prepared to stand high ten1- peratures, and with asbestos or other noncondu'cting sheets or material s iplied to. the inside of the casing and unuersi of thebaiiles as convenient. s
it is proposed to employ a steel tray prepared to standhigh temperatures and the oil burners may he the type in which the fuel is fed onto a weir from wi'iich it drips and infailing is atomized, or other suitable type may be provided for atomizing, with air or steam or both, and with means for starting with air alone until steam is raised for the purpose. Also means for self-operating the oil burner by steam generated in a steel coil suitably disposed in the furnace may be provided. Provision may be made to incorporate a steam. jet blower disposed at the base of the chimney giving an induced draught, and means may be provided for generating the necessary steam from a steel coil placed in the furnace adjacent to the burner.
in a modification of the incinerator the tray may be fitted with a traveling floor thus eliminating the necessity of labour in r 1 J3 7 J L raking the reiuse over the edge or the tray,
and the grate may be of the rocking or movable type to facilitate the falling of the ashes into the pan below.
Non-portable types of the incinerator may be constructed partly of brick, concrete, or the like.
What I claim and desire to Letters Patent is 1.. A refuse destructor comprising a casing, a hopper on the casing a she f disposed in the upper part of the casing below the secure by hopper andforming drying chamber pen along one edge to the renirnnder of the space within the casing, grating disposed within the lower space of the casing and sloping up towards the opening from the drying chainher, means for moving the refuse from the shelf onto the grating, a bridge of fire brick at the bottom of the sloping gr ting. an oil burner disposed on the side 2 said bridge remote from the grating, said oil burner being directed towards the grating, and a fluethrough which the burnt gases are adapted topass upwards leading outof the side of the lower space of the casing that is opposite to the opening from the drying chamber, and means whereby the gases given ofl' from the drying chamber are passed over the flame from the burner before they pass into the atmosphere by way of the flue.
2. A refuse destructor comprising a casing, a hopper on the casing, a metal shelf disposed in the upper part of the casing below the hopper and forming a drying chamber open along one edge to the remainder of the space within the casing, a grating disposed within the {lower space of the casing and sloping up towards the opening from the drying chamber, a hori- Zontal portion of the ratingat the bottom of the sloping part, means for moving the refuse from the metal shelf onto the grating, said means comprising a rack which is adapted to be operated through a door in the casing, a Wall of the brick disposed at the end of the horizontal part of the grating, an oil burner disposed on the side of the wall of fire brick which is remote from the grating, said oil burner being directed towards the grating, a flue through which the burnt gases are adapted to pass upwards, said flue leading out of the side of the lower space of the casing); that is opposite to the opening from the drying chamber, means whereby a portion of the bottom of the metal shelf forms one of the walls of the lower part of the hue, a b'afile disposed at the ehtran'ce of the flue to direct the flames on to the grating, and on to the part of the metal shelf that does not foi'nr part "of the fine, means whereby gases given "(as from the drying chamber are passed over the flame from the burner before they pass into the atmosphere by Way of the flue, a door in the casing adjacent to the hori- Zontal part of the gratin for removing clinker, and an ash pitb'elow the grating and a door in the ash pit.
In testiinony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
FRANCIS RANDOLPH MAtIbONALD.
