Abstract

315,394. Molybdenum Corporation of America, (Assignees of Phillips, W. H.). July 13, 1928, [Convention date]. Right to Patent relinquished. Case-hardening. - A ferrous base article is formed from an alloy containing molybdenum and is then subjected to the action of nitrogen at an elevated temperature, the molybdenum in the alloy accelerating the formation of a nitrogenized coating on the article. In an example an alloy steel containing 2.2 per cent of aluminium, 0.29 per cent of carbon, 0.55 per cent of manganese, 0.89 per cent of molybdenum, 0.18 per cent of silicon, and below 0.04 per cent of phosphorus and sulphur respectively was subjected to the action of ammonia in a closed chamber at a temperature of about 540‹ C. for about 10 hours. In another example a cast iron alloy containing 3.5 per cent of carbon and 0.60 per cent of molybdenum was subjected to a nitrogen at a temperature of 540‹ C. for 20 hours. If desired temperatures up to 700‹ C. may be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 243,613, 272,182, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], 287,156 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a)), and 311,588.
