Abstract

315,338. Miller, L., Dale, S., and Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd., (formerly Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd.). April 12, 1928. Flexible shafts.-A vertical flexible shaft 5 is connected at its ends to driving and driven members 1, 8 respectively and has freedom of axial movement with respect to one of the latter so that it is free from axial load. As shown for a centrifugal machine for artificial silk the driving member 1, Fig. 1, of the motor of the kind described in Specification 272,987, [Class 23, Centrifugal machines &c.], is supported by a bearing 2 in a frame 3 and carries at its upper end a bearing 6 for the driven member 8. The latter carries the spinning pot (not shown). The flexible shaft has a pin and slot connection with the members 1, 8. In a modification the upper bearing 6', Fig. 2, is carried by a fixed sleeve 4<1> and is surrounded by a rubber ring 16 to resist lateral movement. In another modification the flexible shaft 26, Fig. 3, carries the spinning pot directly at its upper end and has a pin and slot connection at its lower end with the hollow shaft 2'1 of the motor. The upper bearing 27 has a rubber ring 33, a spring, or other means yieldingly to resist radial movement. The motor casing 23 is clamped on a plate 34 by a single bolt 36, a rubber ring 35 being interposed. A rubber, felt or like washer may be inserted between the plate 34 and the nut 37. Specification 266,111 also is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
