Mixing solids with fluids in flow.-Apparatus for mixing powder in regulated quantities with liquid in flow comprises means for blowing the powder on to a sheet of liquid which is'constantly changed. As applied to water-softening plant, the main bulk of the water is fed to the central compartment A<1> of a tower by a pipe A<3>. The powder, supplied in regulated quantities, is fed pneumatically through a pipe C<2> into a funnel F containing a shallow F<10> supplied with water by a branch F<6>. The powder is blown on to the surface of the water, which is constantly. changed, and falls into the main body in the compartment A<1>. To prevent loss of powder the funnel is provided with a cover F<3> through which projects a device G for washing the air emitted by the pipe C<2>. The device consists of deflecting members G<7> for a stream of water which in its descent falls over gaps through which the air escapes. In modified forms, the powder may be delivered directly on the surface of the main bulk of water, or may be discharged into a funnel into which a spray or stream of water is delivered.
