Abstract
Comminuted, preferably powdered, solid materials are reacted with a liquid, the solid having a lower specific gravity than the liquid or being otherwise such that it floats on the liquid, by moving the solid through a substantially horizontal chamber which contains a body of the liquid and mixing the solid with the liquid, a direction of flow being imparted to the liquid different from the direction of <PICT:0837428/III/1> <PICT:0837428/III/2> motion of the solid. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, solid enters the chamber at 3 and is conveyed by a worm 2 to a weir 4 where it is discharged. Liquid enters by spray pipes 5 and, passing transversely across the path of the solid, leaves the apparatus by outlets 6. In the form shown in Fig. 2, solid is conveyed from inlet 8 to an outlet weir 9 by paddles 11, the inclination of which is variable. Liquid passes in countercurrent to the solids from inlet 7 to an outlet below a quiescent chamber 10. The liquid level is maintained below that of the outlet weir 9 over which solid is discharged by a paddle wheel or a screw conveyer.
