Abstract

336,221. Raw, G. July 4, 1929. Gases, washing.-Dust is separated from air or gas slowly rising from a body of material, e.g. coal, under pneumatic drying treatment, by producing a mist of finely-atomized liquid and causing the dust to coalesce and sink by gravity, the mist being of fine particles not sinking by themselves and admitted in such small quantity that the moisture in the settled dust is practically imperceptible. Gas is blown through pervious decks a<1> through coal a or the like and rises into a large chamber c in which the gas becomes almost stagnant and is treated with atomized water sprays g' from pipes g. Dust is precipitated on to the lower steeply-sloping sides d<1> into vertical shoots d, e, while gas escapes at h. Each spray g' may comprise a nipple j with a cylindrical nozzle-member k with a domed interior l and a central outwardlyflared discharge orifice m. A narrow passage p in the member k passes water tangentially into a whirling chamber l' formed by closing the dome by a screwed plug n. Alternatively, air is blown from nipples q in a pipe r over narrow adjustable tubes t dipping into water conduits s. The water level in the conduits is automatically maintained constant, and the nozzles and tubes are adjustable. The tubes may be bent to deliver water from above. Wetting or penetrating agents may be added to the liquid. Specifications 274,587, [Class 117. Sifting &c.], and 314,110 are referred to.
