Abstract

651,718. Powder distributers. ALLIENNE, V. G. R. June 17, 1947, Nos. 15994 and 15995. Convention dates, April 6, 1939 and June 1, 1939. [Class 18] [Also in Group XXIX] . A portable apparatus for the distribution of pulverulent and granular materials, e.g. on plants, comprises a powder container 1, Fig. 1, carried by and resiliently urged towards a given position with respect to a fan casing 14 and means operative by the fan for subjecting the container to repeated shocks to cause the material to flow out through an outlet orifice communicating with the fan. As shown in Fig. 3, the container 1 is suspended at 8 from the casing 14 and subjected to the action of a return spring 9 against which the container is displaced outwardly by the periodic engagement of a cam 10, carried by the fan shaft 11, with a member 12 on the wall of the container or on a support 13 therefor. The powder escapes into the air stream of the fan through an orifice 3 and spout 4 and the extent of the flow may be determined by an adjustable shutter 5 and control nut 7. The fan discharges the powder laden mixture into flexible tubes 30 coupled to the fan casing and extended in the form of pipes 15 which are provided with upwardly directed nozzles 31. The apparatus is supported on the user by straps 21, 22 connected to the fan casing and to the lateral pipes 15 and the spacing of the latter may be determined and adjusted by pin-and-slot engagement with a cross member 23, which may also support, through an adjustable chain 27, the central pipe 15. Alternatively, the apparatus may comprise a single centrally disposed pipe 15, Fig. 4 (not shown), and may be supported by a neck strap with an adjustable chain connected to a support that is pivoted to the fan and container unit. The jet emerging from each nozzle is divided into two portions and for this purpose, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, each nozzle 31 has a guide 32 adjustably held against the nozzle wall by a spring 33 that is slidable in a groove 37 and has projections 38 for engagement with holes 39 to hold it in desired position. Alternatively, each nozzle may have two guiding elements 32, Fig. 11, pivoted on a bolt 41 so that they can be adjusted to alter the amplitude of the dual jets and the direction of their central axes, each element having a lateral wall 43, whose edge engages a groove 42 to hold it in selected position, and a top surface 44 that co-operates in a fluid-tight manner with a tip 45 on the nozzle. Ahead of the orifice, the nozzle is formed with a surface 40, Fig. 6, against which the jet of powder from the pipe 15 impinges to become thoroughly mixed with the air. In a modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the container 1 is provided with two compartments for different powders which may pass to the fan under control of a single adjustable shutter or individual shutters.
