[Also in Division B2] An atomizer suitable for spraying a liquid to damp a printing plate in an offset printing machine comprises a plurality of curved screens 23 mounted between a pair of rotating flange members 22 whereby they are sequentially immersed in the liquid 29 in a fountain 1, and a fixed compressed air distributer pipe 13 adapted to supply a stream of air which atomizes the liquid on the screen adjacent a rectangular discharge outlet 7. The screens are so mounted on the flanges by clamps 26 and screws 27 that the openings 24 between the screens are unobstructed. The air may be discharged from the pipe 13 through a plurality of nozzles 14 having convergent/divergent sections, Fig. 3 (not shown), or through an adjustable slot (14d), Fig. 4 (not shown), which is also provided with a convergent/divergent section. The pipe 13 may be curved so that the nozzles 14 at the end thereof are further from the adjacent screen and therefore atomize more liquid. This allows the ends of the printing plates to be more intensely damped. A member 30 removes surplus liquid from the screens and a cover 4 on the fountain is slidable so as to adjust or close the outlet 7. Slides 34 adjacent the outlet 7 may be raised or lowered with aid of a cam-shaft or punched cards in synchronism with the rotation of the screens. The slides, which adjust the opening 7, may be flat, arched, serrated or perforated. The screens may have a locally varying mesh size. The air may be discharged from the nozzles &c. in the sonic region.
