Silica.-In preparing gels of silica, oxides of tin, titanium or tungsten, &c., the hydrogel is purified by treatment with acid, preferably strong sulphuric, nitric, or hydrochloric acids. In preparing silica gels, a hydrogel prepared for example as described in Specification 136,543 is either soaked in sulphuric acid of 60‹ Be. or is washed with sulphuric acid progressively increased in strength up to 60‹ Be. and then progressively diminished. The gel is washed with hot and cold water, and dried, for example, in a stream of air at 80-120‹ C. and further dried in vacuo. The gel may be activated at temperatures up to 870‹ C. Specifications 287,066 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a)) and 263,199 are referred to.
