Abstract

312,991. American Engineering Co., (Assignees of Preston, H. E.). June 4, 1928, [Convention date]. Locking by frictional detents. - A braking- device for preventing the discharge gates of an ash hopper from overrunning the operating- motor comprises a pinion 191 on the motor shaft, which meshes with a pinion 192 mounted on the screwed portion 193 of a shaft 194 carrying clutch-plates 195, 197. Interposed between the parts 192, 197 are a ratchet wheel 205 loosely mounted on a hub portion of the pinion 192, and friction washers 203, 204. The pawl member 206 for the ratchet is frictionally mounted on an adjacent shaft 207, and the arrangement is such that when the pinion 192 is turned clockwise to. open the doors, the pawl 206 is disengaged so that the parts 192, 205 and 197 run solid. When the motor is reversed to close the doors the pinion 192 is retracted by the screw 193, and the pawl is engaged to lock the ratchet. Should the doors overrun the motor the pinion 192 moves towards the clutch-member 197 and a braking action takes place between the parts 192, 197 and 205.
