Adjustably supporting endless-chain elevators with fixed buckets or platforms; driving-gear; guiding endless chains and carriers; anti-fouling guards; feeding-devices; casings. - A vertical shoot 2 for coaling ships without breakage and for similar purposes is fitted with a lowering-device comprising pairs 30<a>, 30b of plates hinged together by pins 30<c> connected to the endless chains 20. The casing is divided by a partition 16, and rollers on the chains run between guides 40a, 40b while rollers 50<b> and 50'a on the carriers engage the partition 16 and the guides 40<a>, 12<e>, 12 so that the plates fold together on the up run and open out while moving downwards. The chains are driven by the weight of the coal and the shaft of the upper sprocket 21a may be fitted with a brake. The pivotal movements of the plates are limited by stops 30<d>, 30k. The plates may be covered with rubber pads. The lower sprocket 21b is protected by a shield 21<c>. The casing 2 is suspended by a loop 3 and is connected with a fixed loading shoot 4 so as to be adjustable vertically without breaking communication. The shoot 4 is detachably connected with a plate 8 and the front of the casing is formed by the series of similar plates 8, 7, 6, 5 engaging one another as at 8<b>, 7<a>. The plates 8, 7, 6 slide in guides in the sides of the casing, while the lowest plate 5 is fixed to the casing. The plate 8 may be hinged to the shoot 4 to permit a swinging movement of the casing 2.
