Abstract

Closures completed by outstanding packing- rings; making capsules and rings.-A closure for bottles, jars, &c. comprises a resilient sheet metal cap having an annular skirt with a holding part 11<@b> and a flaring part 11<a>. An interned marginal flange 12 encloses the edge of a compressed rubber &c. gasket 14. The gasket is compressed by a series of movable circumferential segments and is sprung into the cap, whereupon it is forced above the flange 12 by a rotary cone W having radial projections W<1>, Fig. 6. The upper edge of the gasket 14 is spaced a distance not less than the thickness of the gasket from the top 10 of the cap and a series of depressions 10<a> are provided therein to seat upon the rim ofthe vessel and assist the sealing. The cap may be pressed on manually or mechanically and a ledge 16 is provided around the vessel to form a fulcrum and to facilitate the removal of the cap by means of a coin or knife edge. The gasket 14 is compressed between the rim of the vessel and the cap and up into the space 10<c> when the cap is in use.
