Abstract

Magnetic instruments.-A reed for a sound emitting or receiving diaphragm consists of a strip of metal, part of which is surrounded by a coil connected in series or in parallel with the actuating coils of the driving unit. In the construction, Fig. 1, the reed 1 consists of a strip of metal cut away at the parts 2, the remaining portion in the centre being reduced in thickness and surrounded by a coil 4 connected either in series or in parallel with the actuating coils of the driving unit. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the reed is enlarged at the points 5 opposite the magnet pole pieces 6, the winding 7 surrounding the portion of the reed between the enlargements 5 and being connected in series with the winding on the pole-pieces 6. The reed, instead of being secured at both ends as shown, may be free at one end.
