Veneers.-Imitations inlaid effects are produced in veneered structures by forming on a face of a foundation layer an uneven veneer surface built up of one or more layers of veneer, and then cutting, planing, sanding or grinding in substantial parallelism with the foundation layer so as to produce a surface revealing portions of some or all of the layers. The irregularity of the treated surface may be produced by overlapping strips, coils or the like as in Fig. 6, or by disposing parts or strips to produce patterns, as in Fig. 37, in which case the veneer is subjected to pressure before planing. In a modification ply wood, or veneer on a foundation, is scored or sunk in a regular or irregular pattern, as shown in Fig. 10, and the surface then smoothed. The plywood or veneer may be screwed or clamped to a base plate f in these operations. In a further modification two sheets of veneer provided with slits, are interlaced as shown in Fig. 33, compressed and planed off. One sheet only may be slit. Additional patterns may be formed on the sheets by pressing a sheet of wire-netting on the surface before smoothing.
