Abstract
684,085. Compound sheet materials. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Oct. 8, 1947. [Oct 25, 1946; Oct. 25, 1946] Nos. 27002/47 and 27003/47. Class 140. A transparent, protective surface finish is produced on wood, a decorative laminate, or other material, by heating in contact therewith a layer of paper made wholly or mainly of transparent, organic artificial fibres which has been impregnated with a heat-curable synthetic resin which, when cured, is transparent and has a refractive index differing by not more than 0.23 from that of the artificial fibres. The paper may be made from a mixture of viscose or acetate rayon fibres and fine grass fibres, and may be treated with regenerated cellulose to increase its wet strength. The synthetic resin may be melamine- or ureaformaldehyde resin as an aqueous or aqueous alcohol solution or a syrup, or an alkyd resin which may be modified by copolymerising with styrene or diallyl phthalate may be used. Suitable resins are made by reacting glycol, diethylene glycol, fumaric acid, and phthalic anhydride, and copolymerising the product with styrene or diallyl phthalate. Benzoyl peroxide may be added as catalyst, and paratoluene sulphonic acid as a gel-promoter. The resin may be applied to a polished steel pressplate and the paper smoothed over the coating, after which the assembly is heated to part-cure the resin and hot-pressed on to wood which has been similarly coated with partly-cured resin. The press-plate may be embossed and may be pre-treated with a parting agent such as soya bean lecithin, petroleum jelly, or a silicone lubricant. The surfacing treatment may be applied to plywood simultaneously with its formation by glueing the veneers together. Two superposed sheets of paper may be applied. Burn-proof table tops may be made by including a layer of aluminium foil beneath the top wood veneer. Sheets of paper impregnated with phenol-aldehyde resin may be interposed between the aluminium foil and the adjacent wood veneers.
