Reel and non-endless web apparatus; actuating and controlling.-A moving or changing advertising device, stopping place indicator, programme number indicator, &c., comprises a pair of spaced end plates 35 between which are located two rollers 45, 46 on to and from which a display band 47 is wound, two or more supporting drums 39 - - 42, one of which, 39, driving the band, is operated by a solenoid or like electromagnetic device 76 having means for reversing the direction of rotation of the drums and for stopping them in a definite position, combined with means, arranged outside the plates 35, for driving one magazine roller 45, 46 from the other in such a manner as to cause one roller to take up the same amount of band as is unwound from the other. The solenoid core carries a rack 64 which engages a pinion 65 which is connected by a train of wheels and a Geneva stop with a pinion 50 on the drum 39. The direction of rotation of the drum 39 is determined by which of two pinions 52, 53 on a rockable lever 54 is moved into effective engagement. The band 47 is perforated at its edges to mesh with projections on the rollers 39 - - 42. The means for driving the magazine rollers 45, 46 at the requisite relative speeds consists of a narrow strip wound round reels 80, 81 on extensions of the shafts of the rollers 45, 46, the strip being surrounded by an endless elastic driving belt 83. The solenoid 76 may be energized manually, or by contacts on overhead cables in the case of tramway &c. cars.
