Emulsions, making.-Emulsifying agents are made by converting oxyalkylamines, such as mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine, into their salts with cycloaliphatic or hydroaromatic acids, or sulphonic acids or sulphuric acids possessing a pronounced wetting or emulsifying power. Such acids are naphthenic acids, aliphatic sulphonic acids, such as those described in Specifications 272,967 and 288,612, aromatic or hydroaromatic sulphonic acids containing alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl groups, with or without further substituents, whether in the nucleus or in the side chain, turkey red oils, sulphonation products of mineral or alipliatic tar oils, and the lignosulphonic acids contained in sulphite-cellulose waste liquor. Less than the equivalent quantities of the organic bases may be added to the acids, or a portion of the organic base may be replaced by an inorganic base, such as caustic soda or ammonia; mixtures of organic bases may also be used. In examples, tri-ethanolamine is treated with naphthenic acid and with dibutylnaphthalene sulphonic acid; instead of the latter, other sulphonic acids, such as those of methyl., ethyl-, propyl-or cycloalkyl-substituted organic compounds may be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 295,024.
