Abstract

Viscous sulphuric acid sludge resulting from the sulphuric acid treatment of a petroleum oil is rendered more fluid by mixture with a small proportion, e.g. 2-6 per cent by volume of a phenol and at least one organic acid such as naphthenic acid. Phenols referred to are phenol, cresols and alkylated phenols derived from petroleum; a suitable mixture of phenols and organic acids is that obtained by the acidification of spent caustic soda solutions used for treating non-acidtreated petroleum oils. The ratio of phenols to organic acids may be in the range 1:3 to 1:1. The sludge may be treated with phenol and acid at 150-200 DEG F.ALSO:Viscous sulphuric acid sludge resulting from the sulphuric acid treatment of a petroleum oil is rendered more fluid by mixture with a small proportion, e.g. 2-6 per cent, by volume, of a phenol and at least one organic acid such as naphthenic acid. Phenols referred to are phenol, cresols and alkylated phenols derived from petroleum; a suitable mixture of phenols and organic acids is that obtained by the acidification of spent caustic soda solutions used for treating non-acid-treated cracked petroleum oils. The ration of phenols to organic acids may be in the range 1 : 3 to 1 : 1. The sludge may be treated with the phenol and acid at 150-200 DEG F.
