308,610. Ducamp, A. J. March 24, 1928, [Convention date]. Motor spirit is made less liable to knock by adding thereto mercury cyanide, e.g. 0.1-1.0 gram to 10 litres of petrol. The cyanide is dissolved direct in alcohol fuels. It may be dispersed in hydrocarbon fuels by either (1) first dissolving in a 50-50 mixture of 90 per cent alcohol and ether, maybe adding a fatty substance, and dissolving this solution in the petrol, etc.; or (2) first dissolving in glycerine, preferably adding phenol, and also olive oil or codliver oil or petroleum or other fatty substance and an alkaline substance such as sodium hydrate, and adding to the petrol &c.
