Abstract

Platen presses.-A drum 25 with perforations 11 and a feed opening 7 is fitted with compressing pistons 5, 6 adapted to enter opposite ends of the drum, one or each piston enclosing a piston 15a reciprocated a limited distance therein by a rod 15, a pitman 30, and a wrist-pin 28 on a wheel 4. The piston cylinders 12, 13 are revolved in opposite directions by gear wheels 16, 17, and carry with them the enclosed pistons. In operation, the supply of material down the feed 7 is cut off by a slide 8 as the pistons advance, and the pistons 5, 15a move as a unit until the pressure exceeds that of a spring 18, when further movement of the inner piston 15a is taken up by the spring. The revolution of the pistons 5, 6 in opposite directions distributes the material evenly. Oil escapes through the perforations 11, and through perforations 24 in the pistons 5, 6 to oil ducts 26 and the flared end-supports 20 for the cylinders 12, 13. The slide 8 is withdrawn, to admit more material, by an annular shoulder 9 on the piston 5 engaging, a stop 9a on the slide. The compressed material is removed through a closured opening (not shown).
