Abstract
306,692. Selway, E. D. Feb. 11. 1928. Loud-speakers: diaphragms; magnetic instruments.-The coil-driven conical diaphragm of an acoustic device, such as a loud-speaker, is supported at its apex and/or periphery by two or more triple-hinged links which serve to centre the coil in the magnetic air-gap but do not furnish any restoring force. When the links are employed at the apex only, the base of the diaphragm may be supported by a ring of thin sheet rubber, kid, oiled silk, &c., whilst if the links are provided at the periphery only, the diaphragm may be centred and supported at its apex by radial strings &c. In the constructions shown, links are provided both at the periphery and apex of the diaphragm. Fig. 1 shows a loudspeaker in which the pot-magnet b is carried by a support c on a baseboard a which is rigidly secured to a front board d. A conical diaphragm f of paper, thin bristol board, &c. is mounted opposite a circular aperture in the board d and carries a coil l located in the magnetic air-gap j. The coil former k is formed with a circular flange m which is connected by a series of hinged links p, p<1>, p<11> to a ring n attached by legs o to the board d. Each link, Figs. 5 and 7, consists of a pair of hinges, the leaves of which are hinged together at three fulcra. In the construction, Fig. 5, each one of the pair of hinges consists of four folding leaves of light metal, celluloid, &c. the two outer leaves being rigidly fixed flat against the adjacent faces of the flange m and ring n respectively, the leaves being pivoted together in the manner of an ordinary metal hinge. In the modification, Fig. 7, the ring and flange constitute the outer leaves, the leaves proper being formed of thin bristol board &c. and secured together and to the ring and flange by strips' of kid, woven silk fabric, &c. A flat flange q having a polygonal outer edge is secured to the periphery of the diaphragm f and is' connected to the front board d by a series of links r similar in construction to that shown in Figs. 5 or 7. In the modified construction, Fig. 3, the links p are disposed between and hinged to a solid back s of the coil former and a flat cross-shaped member t supported on a rod u screwed to the central magnet pole.
