Abstract

257,317. McLachlan, N. W. April 30, 1925. Diaphragms; loud-speakers ; magnetic instruments. - Relates to devices for emitting or receiving sound, such as loud-speaking telephones, microphones, and gramophones provided wtih large diaphragms. According to the invention the diaphragm is constructed with a central part in the form of a straight or curved sided cone and an outer flat part, and is made of cloth, " doped " or impregnated with a substance such as a solution of celluloid. Means are provided for adjusting the tension of the diaphragm, and, in the application to a telephone, instrument, for resiliently mounting the receiver or transmitter, the vibrating member of which actuates or is actuated by the diaphragm. The Figure shows a loud-speaker, in which a " doped " cloth diaphragm D is secured peripherally between two wooden or metal rings C, E, screwed together. The ring C is channelled, and in it is located a ring F which bears on the diaphragm and can be adjustably drawn into the channel by means of screws P, so as to vary the tension of the diaphragm. The extent to which the diaphragm is doped may be graded, falling off to zero or a low value at the edge. After doping with celluloid solution, a coat of " aeroplane dope may be applied. The diaphragm may be insulated from its supporting rings, or from the tensioning ring, by felt &c. The electromagnetic receiver M is freely suspended from the rings C, E by adjustable springs. S, the natural frequency of which is low. When a receiver of the reed type is used, the reed is fixed to the apex of the diaphragm by a connecting piece of duralumin, brass, or steel. A silk front K is provided, which is glued to an outer ring R and serves as an additional support for the telephone receiver, being attached to a ring screwed to the receiver. A flat or curved. sound-reflector may be mounted adjacent to the diaphragm, and its position may be adjustable. A plurality of diaphragms, or a plurality of operating or actuated devices with interconnected vibrating systems may be employed each having a different natural frequency, and when two diaphragms are employed these may be arranged one within the other or arranged apex to apex.
