Abstract

305,499. Lynden, Robert Aernout, Baron van. Oct. 29, 1927. Fluid speed indicators.-In indicating-apparatus of the kind in which a swinging member is exposed to the action of two oppositely acting forces both of a dynamic nature and derived from fluid movement, the fluid movements are set up by a common originating movement or two independent originating movements, the arrangement being such that variations' in the originating movement or movements result in dissimilar variations in the two forces. The apparatus may be used as an aircraft turn indicator, or as a speed indicator. In the form shown in Fig. 1 fluid set in motion in a conduit A by a propeller B driven by the body the speed of which is to be measured, or set in motion by the movement of the apparatus through air or water, flows through conduits C, D. The former ends in a nozzle C<1>, and the latter is spaced from a conduit D<2> ending in a nozzle D<3>, the nozzles being opposite shaped flanges of members E, E<4> on the shaft of an indicating member. In a modification, the apparatus comprises conduits F<2>, F<3>, Fig. 2, differently spaced from the conduits G, G<1> ending in converging nozzles G<2> spaced from tubes ending in nozzles H<3>, H<4> opposite shaped members on the indicating shaft. In both forms, the fluid streams may be originated by a turbine disc and a smooth disc on a common shaft. In a further form, the two streams are originated by a turbine disc L<2>, Fig. 5, the first stream passing through openings M<1>, M<2> to act on a member N<1> on the indicator shaft and the second passing between a revolving drum L<3> and its enclosing casing and thence to an opening M<6> to act on a member N<2>. If desired, the fluid streams may be of an intermittent or pulsating character; the apparatus may then comprise a cam-operated vibrating member O<1>, Fig. 6, conduits P<3>, P<4> differently spaced from an annular chamber Q<3>, and a vane Q<4>. Specification 270,418 is referred to.
