304,613. Cassella & Co., Ges., L. Jan. 21,1928, [Convention date]. Addition to 260,998. Halogen derivatives of anthanthrone are prepared by treating an aqueous solution of an anthanthrone sulphonic acid with a halogenating agent, whereby the sulphonic acid is replaced by halogen. The halogenated products separate out of the solution, and may be used for dyeing and printing without further purification. Cotton is dyed from the vat in orange shades. In examples, anthanthrone monosulphonic acid, prepared by the action of fuming sulphuric acid on anthanthrone, is converted to (1) chloroanthanthrone by the use of sodium chlorate or chlorine in acid solution, and (2) bromoanthanthrone by the use of bromate-bromide mixture in acid solution. By the same means anthanthrone disulphonic acid, prepared by condensing 1: 1<1>-dinaphthyl-4 : 4<1>- disulphonic acid-8: 8<1>-dicarboxylic acid (Specification 278,100) is converted to the corresponding chloro- and bromo-anthanthrones.
