Abstract

The process of printing textiles with vat or sulphur dyes is improved by incorporating in the printing pastes an anthraquinone mercaptan, or a salt or ether thereof, an anthraquinone thiocyanate, a dianthraquinonyl mono- or disulphide, or a substitution product or reduction product of any of these substances still containing oxygen in the ms-position. Anthraquinone itself, its hydroxy or amino derivatives or sulphonic or carboxylic acids, or the products of the reaction of 2-aminoanthraquinones with aromatic sulphochlorides, or reduction products of these substances still containing oxygen in the ms-position, may also be incorporated in the printing pastes, as may also hydrotropic agents and glycerine or other water-soluble alcohols. As examples of the anthraquinone mercaptans &c. which may be used, the 1- and 2-mercaptans, 1 : 5-, 2 : 6-, and 2 : 7-dimercaptans, and their alkali and ammonium salts, 1- or 2-anthraquinone thiocyanates, anthraquinone dithiocyanates, alkyl, aralkyl and aryl ethers of anthraquinone mercaptans, 1 : 1<1>-, 1 : 2<1>-, and 2 : 2<1>-dianthraquinonyl mono-or disulphides, and alkyl, halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy and amino substitution products of such substances, are specified. The dyestuff preparations and printing pastes are made by the processes described in Specification 349,955. The manufacture of dyestuff preparations and printing pastes from the following dyestuffs is described in examples : 6 : 6<1>-diethoxythioindigo, the dyestuff from naphthoxythiophene carboxylic acid made in accordance with example 1 of Specification 15607/07, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.], Caledon jade green, the dyestuff from 6-methoxy-3-oxythionaphthene and 4-methyl-6-brom-2 : 3-dihydro-3-ketothionaphthene-2-(p-dimethylamino)-anil, and Indocarbon CL, the additions including anthraquinone-2-mercaptan and -2 : 6-dimercaptan, 1 - chloranthraquinone - 2 - thiocyanate, 1 - thiocyano - 5 - chloranthraquinone, 1 - thiocyano - 4 - oxyanthraquinone, anthraquinone-1-thioethylether, 1 : 1<1>- and 2 : 2<1>-dianthraquinonyldisulphide, anthraquinone - 1 - phenylmercaptan sulphonic acid, 1-thiocyanoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid, and, as hydrotropic agents, the sodium salts of dimethylsulphanilic acid, dimethylmetanilic acid, tetrahydronaphthalene-b -sulphonic acid, or benzylsulphanilic acid, or urea. Specifications 350,963, 371,848, and 378,553 also are referred to. 1-Chloranthraquinone-2-thiocyanate is made by diazotizing 1-chlor-2-amino-anthraquinone and treating the product with potassium thiocyanate. 1-Thiocyanoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid is made by diazotizing 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid and treating the product with potassium thiocyanate. Anthraquinone-1-phenylmercaptan sulphonic acid is made by treating anthraquinone-1-mercaptan with benzene in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid and sulphonating the product.
