Abstract
304,436. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 9, 1927. Sulphuric acid ester-salts of nitroanthraquinols are obtained by treating a nitroanthraquinone with a metal in presence of a tertiary base and sulphur trioxide, halogensulphonic acids, or alkyl sulphuric halides. In examples, a- and #-nitroanthraquinones, 1-nitro-2-methylanthraquinone, and 1 : 5-dinitroanthraquinone are treated with methyl sulphuric acid chloride or chlorsulphonic acid in the presence of copper powder and pyridine. When treated with acid oxidizing agents, the esters regenerate the nitroanthraquinones, while non-oxidizing acids cause a reaction with formation of a mixture of nitro and aminoanthraquinone. An aqueous solution of the pyridimum ester salt from 1-nitro-2-methylanthraquinone deposits an insoluble red crystalline substance on standing.
