Abstract
1277365 Alkyl aryl sulphonic acids LABOFINA SA 17 Feb 1970 [5 Nov 1969] 7611/70 Heading C2C A process for reducing the sulphuric acid content of alkyl arylsulphonic acids having a molecular weight between 300 and 650 comprises treating these sulphonic acids with a neutralization agent selected from ammonia and ammonium salts of acids one valency at least of which having an acidity equal to or lower than that of the alkyl aryl sulphonic acids, the amount of the neutralization agent employed being such that the number of equivalents of ammonia or ammonium salt added, be equal to the sum of the number of moles of the sulphuric acid content and of between 0 and 30% of the number of moles of alkylaryl sulphonic acids and separating the resultant crystalline ammonium hydrogen sulphate. In examples sulphonic acids in admixture with sulphuric acid are treated with ammonium carbonate, gaseous ammonia and diammonium sulphate, and the ammonium hydrogen sulphate formed is filtered off. Starting materials employed in the examples include products obtained by reacting a polypropylenebenzene alkylate with oleum, a branched chain dodecyl benzene with oleum and dodecyl benzene with sulphuric acid.
