Abstract
1416678 Removing mercury from anthraquinone sulphonic acids IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Jan 1973 [20 Oct 1971] 48716/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C1] Mercury is removed from a mercury-catalysed anthraquinone sulphonation reaction product mixture by diluting the reaction product mixture with water, adding a source of sulphide ions, e.g. H 2 S or alkali metal sulphides, and removing the insoluble mercury sulphide which is formed. The reaction mixture is preferably diluted to provide a sulphuric acid content of from 10 to 30% by weight and a flocculant of the cationic polyacrylamide type is added to assist separation of the mercury sulphide. The reaction product mixture may be one obtained in any conventional mercury-catalysed sulphonation of anthraquinone directed to obtaining anthraquinone-1-sulphonic acid or a mixture of the 1,5- and 1,8-disulphonic acids, e.g. with oleum in the presence of sodium sulphate at 100-125‹ C. and in the presence of mercuric oxide catalyst.
