Catalytic agents, preparation of.-Catalysts particularly for the oxidation of hydrocarbons are obtained by precipitating a slightly acidified solution of a neutral metallic salt by means of a solution of a salt of an oxygen-containing inorganic acid, to which sufficient alkali has been added to give a slight excess in the mixture. Examples are (1) a mixture of cerium, cadmium, and aluminium nitrates precipitated by means of alkali metal phosphate; (2) a mixture of iron and zinc nitrates precipitated by means of sodium tetraborate. The catalysts may be treated before or during use with small quantities of corrosive gases, such as halogens, hydrogen halides, nitrosyl chloride, &c.
