Compound or composite bricks, blocks, slabs, and tiles. - Relates to rubber-faced surfacing blocks &c. for floors, walls, table tops, &c. of the kind comprising a base of cement or concrete and a facing of rubber which has been vulcanized in situ. According to the invention, an excess of sulphur above that required to form hard rubber at the interface is provided either in the base or in the rubber, so that a polysulphide is formed which permeates the inter-facial surfaces and firmly unites the rubber to the cement. The cement base may contain filler such as mineralized fibre, cocoanut fibre, sisal, jute fibre, cotton fluff, wood four, and asbestos, or may be formed of successive layers of felt or woven fabric impregnated with cement. The rubber face may be hard rubber throughout or may be in layers of hard rubber at the interface and soft rubber on the exterior. In an example, a cement base, #ths of an inch thick, composed of equal weights of cement and cocoanut fibre, has applied to it a film of rubber solution, a thin sheet, 1/50th of an inch thick, of hard rubber and a sheet #th of an inch thick of soft rubber. The whole is then vulcanized by heat and pressure. Instead of a thin sheet of hard rubber, a layer of high-sulphur rubber solution or a layer of latex composition of the required thickness may be applied.
