Abstract

446,059. Compound sheet materials. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI, 21, Via Fabio Filzi, Milan, Italy. Aug. 12, 1935, No. 22687. Convention date, Aug. 14, 1934. [Class 140] [See also Group X] A material for surfacing floors, roads, and the like, comprises an upper wearing layer 1 of soft rubber integrally bonded, by co-vulcanization therewith,to an underlayer 2 formed of plies of fabric treated with hard rubber. The underlayer constitutes an anchorage for bolts, screws, rivets or like means for fastening the material in position, the shanks of the fastening means being adapted to pass through holes in the underlayer, and the heads of the fastening means being adapted to overlie the underlayer so as to engage therewith. The fastening bolts 4 may be incorporated in the material during manufacture thereof as shown in Fig. 1, or fastening screws 9, Fig. 2, may be positioned during the laying of the material. In the latter case, the screws 9 are passed through undercut apertures 11 in the wearing layer 1, registering with holes 10 in the underlayer 2, and after positioning of the screws the apertures 12 may be closed by soft rubber stoppers 13 which may be of larger diameter than the apertures 12 and be secured by a self-curing cement. The material may be in the form of sheets, slabs, tiles or like units, and the edges of the units may be recessed or chamfered so as to leave a space to receive a filling material. The underlayer is formed by superimposing upon one another the required number of plies of fabric previously rubberized and more or less surface coated with a rubber mixing of a composition adapted to form hard rubber or ebonite upon subsequent vulcanization of the material. The treated fabric for forming the underlayer may be arranged in laminations in a mould, together with the fasteners, and the rubber composition to form the soft rubber wearing layer may then be applied. The mould is then closed and heated so as to vulcanize the two layers together. Alternatively, the underlayer may be separately prepared by partial vulcanization and the two layers may be united during vulcanization of the soft rubber wearing layer. In a further modification the treated fabric underlayer and the soft rubber wearing layer may be built up by superimposing the layers upon one another under pressure, and then inserting the resulting slab in the vulcanizing mould.
