Abstract

1382619 Laminates R HEBROK 25 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971] 3370/72 Heading B5N A floor or wall covering comprises an imperforate base layer made of rubber, plastics or other material which reduces the risk of slipping having projections integral therewith on the outer surface of the base layer to provide on their end faces respective tread or visible surface elements and a protective layer, e.g. of metal, wood, plastics or textile material, covering the whole of the outer side of the base layer except for the end faces of the projections, the protective layer being of material resistant to aggressive agents such as cleaning agents and industrial waste which left in contact with the base layer would tend to corrode it, the protective layer being bonded to the base layer so tightly that penetration of the aggressive agents between the layers is inhibited. The projections which may be at least equal in height to the thickness of the protective layer, may be in the form of burls or ribs of circular oval or angular cross-section or in the form of a lattice. The pretective layer may be provided with markings, e.g. arrows, reference images or inscriptions formed by elevations and/or indentations or depressions and by colour printing. The protective layer may be luminous. The layers may be bonded together by vulcanization, cementing or adhesion. The covering may be produced by bonding together the protective layer and base layer in a mould with heat and pressure, the protective layer covering the whole surface of the base layer and the protective layer then being removed from the projections on the base layer by grinding, milling or cutting. Alternatively a continuous method of production may be utilized, e.g. in a calender, or a protective layer provided with cut-outs corresponding to the projections on the surface of the base layer may be used. The covering may be provided in the form of large webs or cut-to-size pieces, e.g. tiles.
