Abstract

Solenoids.-A solenoid is provided with an exciting winding OW carrying an alternating current, a polarizing winding IW carrying a continuous current, and an armature MC controlled by a spring HS or otherwise so as to have a natural period of vibration considerably greater than that of the alternating current; the external circuit of the winding IW is of low impedance, or a separate short-circuited winding is provided. In the arrangement shown, the armature MC carries a brush A moving over a rheostat, or it may operate an indicator or a switch. For the polarizing winding a permanent magnet may be substituted.
