Mineral waxes, purifying.-Montan wax, crude or deresinified. fractions thereof extracted by solvents, or the wax alcohols and acids thereof obtained by saponification and acidification, are refined by treatment with oxidizing agents in presence of aqueous sulphuric acid. Oxidizing agents specified are hydrogen peroxide, and chromic acid or derivatives thereof. Solid or liquid inorganic or organic diluents or dispersing agents, e.g. silicic acid, clay, carbon tetrachloride, may be used to prevent thickening. In an example, 500 lb. of crude wax is deresinified in known manner, melted, and mixed with a solution of 1250 lb. of sulphuric acid monohydrate in 680 lb. of water. 500 lb. of sodium bichromate in 500 lb. of water is stirred in in 4 hours, and the mixture agitated until the solution is deep green. After settling of the mass, the upper layer, wax, is withdrawn, remelted, washed with 10 per cent sulphuric acid to remove chromium &c. compounds. and then with water. Further bleaching may be effected by treating the wax, melted or in solution, with floridin, decolorizing charcoal, or like adsorbent. The exhausted chromate may be oxidized in known manner and reused. The treatment may take place in countercurrent. Specification 292,298 is referred to.
