Machine guns.- A safety catch for preventing the forward movement of the firing pin 3 until the breech-block 8 has fully closed the breech, comprises a pair of teeth 1, 2 on the firing pin and another pair of teeth 4, 5 on a plunger 6, which, when the breech is open, is pressed in by a spring 7 to lock the firing, pin, but which, when the breech is closed, is lifted by the wedging action of inclined planes 9 on the breech-block against an inclined plane 10 on the plunger, the firing pin being thereby released. The engagement of either tooth of one pair with either tooth of the other pair will lock the firing pin. The provision of these two pairs of teeth therefore ensures the locking of the firing pin even when the inward movement of the plunger is delayed or the locking engagement is temporarily undone by accident.
