Abstract

302,741. Aitken, J. Sept. 29, 1927. Piston packing. - Access of pressure fluid to the space F at the back of a packing-ring C is prevented by a plate D seated in a recess in the upper edge of the packing-ring and in a groove E at the bottom of the packing-ring groove, the plate being pressed downwards by fluid admitted through passages G. The plate is formed in halves with overlapping joints, the halves being pivoted together by a pin at one joint. The joint K in the packing-ring 0 may be covered by a projection J on the plate D lying in recesses 0, P in the ends of the ring. The projection may engage a recess R in the side of the packing-ring groove, in order to prevent rotation of the packing. In a modification the plate D is located in a groove at an intermediate point in the back of the packing-ring C, thus exposing part of the back of the ring to fluid pressure.
