Abstract

302,625. Royce, F. H. Sept. 15, 1927. Shafts; securing together machine elements for transmitting rotary motion.-In resilient driving- means, shown applied to the drive of a timing- gear bevel wheel i from the crank shaft b of an engine, a rigid shaft c<2> and a torsionally flexible shaft c<1> are rigidly coupled torsionally at one end to the shaft b while at the other the shaft c<1> is coupled to the wheel i and the shaft c<2> is connected to the shaft c<1> by a friction coupling allowing only a limited amount of lost motion. The friction coupling serves to damp torsional oscillation of the shaft c<1>. The end of the shaft b is carried in a bearing a and has internal serrations b<1> engaged by similar serrations on the shaft c<1> and on a sleeve c<6> secured to the shaft c<2>. At the other end serrations c<9> on the shaft c' engage with the sleeve of a friction disc c<10>, pressing, under the stress of star shaped springs f, f<1>, upon a flange c<12> on the shaft c<2>, which bears against a flange d<2> on the sleeve d secured to the wheel i<1> friction discs g, g<1> being interposed. The flange d<2> is secured to a drum e carrying a flange e<1> against which bears the spring f, the drum being notched to engage notches of similar size on the disc c<10> and of smaller size on the flange c<12>, thus providing for lost motion between the shaft c<2> and the parts c, d. The notches on the flange c<12> normally lie centrally in the notches in the drum e when the engine is at rest. For starting the engine, a worm-wheel y connected by a friction coupling to the sleeve d is rotated. According to the Provisional Specification, the spring f<1> may be reversed, so that its arms bear on the disc c<10>.
