Abstract

175,429. McKechnie, W. E. Nov. 20, 1920. Securing c h a i n - wheels &c. on shafts.- In elastic driving- mechanism for motorcycles &c., concentric driving and driven members are connected by a plurality of L- shaped blade-springs, of which the shorter limbs lie in a circumferential channel in one member, and the longer limbs issue radially through slots therein and contact with a like number of curved vanes on the other member. As applied to a motor-cycle, the hub 12 of the spring drum is screwed by. a left-hand thread on a standard hub 13, being locked thereon by a right-hand threaded nut (not shown), and the hub 11 of a sprocket 9 bears freely upon it. In the form shown, each short limb 4 of the springs 1, lying in the channel 2 of the drum, is extended, as shown at 6<1>, to lie against the long limb 6 of the adjacent spring. The shoulders 5 of the slots 3 are so curved that the springs are initially in contact with them. The springs 1 normally contact by their free ends with the curved vanes 7, but as the driving- torque increases, they roll further on the vanes until their stiffness is sufficient to transmit the load, or until, as shown, the drive becomes solid. The curvature of the vanes coincides with the natural flexure of the springs.
