Boxes; brushes; glands; packing, metallic; cooling. - In a stuffing-box for high-pressure engines &c., two packing and guiding members 12, 20 are separated by a lantern sleeve 22. The packing 20 is coned to fit a corresponding seating in a casing 2 secured by bolts 31. The packings, which may be of white metal and may be undivided, or split, are pressed axially by means of a screw cap 13, beneath which are placed a spherical washer 27 and a follower 26. Lubricating and cooling liquid is admitted by a passage 10 to the lantern 22 and is discharged by a passage 11.
