Abstract

299,923. Stone & Co., Ltd., J., Pike, F. J., and Neville, H. Aug. 8, 1927. Screw propellers.-A screw propeller or blade is electrolytically coated with metallic chromium. When a lead anode is employed its area is half that of the cathode surface of the propeller. For coating the propeller a local bath is formed around it and made fluid - tight. When coating one blade at a time the blade a<1> is fitted into a bath formed of flexible sheet metal c which is bent to fit closely aiound the blade and forms a side wall of a bath, the bottom of which is constituted by the face of the blade to be coated. The sheet c is held by a frame member of wood, two long portions d and cross portion e being bolted together, wood packing pieces g, g<1> being disposed at the edges. The anode is comprised of a grid formed of a flat lead strip or interlaced rods, the ends of the rods being connected to suitable set screws, the total area of this grid being half that of the blade. The electrolyte is introduced into the bath to submerge the blade, chromium acid or a suitable chromium salt solution being employed. Pickling, washing or other treatment may be carried out in the local bath and cooling of the bath may be provided to prevent over-heating. Other metals such as steel may be used in place of lead for the anode grid.
