Abstract

298,676. Garrard, C. G. July 15, 1927. Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises an epicyclic train controlled by friction gearing of the kind with cones such as 15, 22, Figs. 1 and 5, connected by a movable ring such as 26, or by a movable, roller or ball. Means comprising a cam such as 24, Fig. 1, produces axial thrust in the cone gearing ensuring adhesion. In the arrangement of Fig. 1, there is a toothed epicyclic train 11, 12, 13 two members being geared to the two cones 15, 22. The ring 26 encircles one cone and is shifted to change speed by a shipper 27 which tilts the ring so that it creeps automatically sideways along a spiral path. When the cones are connected by a roller, the axis of this is tilted to get this creepimg effect. A ball may be used to connect the cones, and the whole may be controlled by a governor. The speed changes are gradual through neutral to reverse. In Fig. 2 is shown a friction epicyclic train 37, 38, 50 controlled by a form of the friction variable gearing having a central cone 34 and three spaced coacting cones 43 with encircling idlers 26. The thrust cam device 35 produces adhesion both in the epicyclic train and in the auxiliary cone gearing.
