Abstract
847,958. Variable-speed friction gearing- SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY SERVICES (LEEDS) Ltd. Jan. 21, 1959 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 33739/57. Class 80 (2). Variable-speed friction gearing comprises interfitting coaxial conical members 11, 14 having an annular gap of uniform width between them and being separated by balls 3C held in driving engagement by resilient means 20, the balls 30 being moved lengthwise of the gap to vary the ratio between the members. The balls are held by a conical cage comprising a fixed part 35 formed with radial slots and a rotatable part 38 with spiral slots such that relative rotation of the parts 35 and 38 by knob 42 produces lengthwise movement of the balls. To increase the obtainable ratio a plurality of gearings may be used in series as shown in Fig. 1 in which a driving cone 11 drives a driven cone 16 through three sets of balls and two double-sided idler cones 14, 15.
