Actuating pumps by fluid-pressure motors.- The volume of the ocicillating liquid column by which power is transmitted from the piston of the driving machine to the compressor piston is varied to adjust the working of the compressor without varying that of the driving machine. Fig. 1 shows a hand-tap 13 by which liquid may be discharged from the column 7 acting on the intermediate piston 8 to which the compressor piston 10 is coupled. Additional liquid may be supplied through a pipe 15. Fig. 2 shows liquid discharge pipes 41, 42, 43 leading to a cylinder having a piston 44 adjustable by a hand-wheel ; discharges of liquid takes place through a bore in the piston and through a pipe 60 when the intermediate piston rises to the level of the pipe 41, 42 or 43 for which the piston 44 is set. Fig. 5 shows a device applied to the third stage of a three-stage compressor, in which a piston 17 controlling the liquid discharge is actuated by a link connected to a lever 20 pivoted to the coupling 9 of the intermediate and compressor pistons and having a fulcrum 21 adjustable by a handwheel. Compensating liquid may be supplied on the compression stroke by a pump operated independently or from the drive of the compressor.
