Maleic acid; maleic anhydride. - In the production of maleic acid and maleic anhydride by the catalytic oxidation of furane or its derivatives with oxygen or air as described in the parent Specification, the quantity of oxygen or air employed is a considerable excess such as 20-100 times the theoretical amount. The substance to be oxidized, such as furfural can be vaporized and mixed with the oxidizing gas, or steam may be passed through furfural heated to a suitable temperature and then led into the oxidizing gas, or the furfural may be atomized by air or steam in a space through which hot air is passed. The process may be effected at 50-250‹ C. at ordinary, increased, or reduced pressure, In an example 60 grams of furfural are vaporized in 4 hours and mixed with a current of air passing at 1.5 litres per second, the mixture being passed over vanadic acid on pumice stone at 180‹ C.
