Abstract

3-Picoline is purified from 4-picoline or 2,6-lutidine by subjecting the mixture to a mildly oxidizing oxygen-containing gas at raised temperature in presence of an oxidation catalyst comprising an oxide of an element of the A sub-groups of Groups V and VI of the periodic system, so that a selective oxidation of the impurities takes place, and 3-picoline is separated. In examples, hot air and picoline is passed at 350 DEG C. over vanadium pentoxide prepared by spraying an aqueous suspension of ammonium vanadate on to small granules of silica and calcining. A vanadium-iron catalyst prepared from ferric nitrate and vanadyl nitrate, or a vanadium-chromium, vanadium-molybdenum, or chromium-tungsten catalyst may be used.
