Abstract
A catalyst for the preparation of acetaldehyde and crotonaldehyde from acetylene and steam is prepared from cadmium oxide and phosphoric acid. In the example, 128 parts of cadmium oxide are dissolved in an aqueous solution of 98 parts of orthophosphoric acid. The solution is evaporated to dryness, and the product dried and pelleted.ALSO:Acetaldehyde; crotonaldehyde; catalytic agents' preparation and treatment of.-Acetylene and steam' preferably in the ratio of 1 : 3, are passed at elevated temperature, e.g. 300-400 DEG C., over a chemical compound containing cadmium, phosphorus, and oxygen, with or without hydrogen. Suitable starting materials for the preparation of the catalyst are cadmium oxide and phosphoric acid. Usually the main products are acetaldehyde and crotonaldehyde, but small amounts of acetic acid, methane, and oxides of carbon may be obtained. The ratio of the acetaldehyde to the crotonaldehyde produced depends on the exact composition of the cadmium phosphate employed. If the ratio of the number of molecular proportions of phosphoric anhydride (P2O5) to the number of molecular proportions of cadmium oxide in the compound is below 0,4 or above 0,6, only very small quantities of crotonaldehyde are obtained, while at a ratio of 0,47 the yield of crotonaldehyde rises to a maximum. The total conversion of acetylene to acetaldehyde and crotonaldehyde also reaches a maximum at the same ratio of 0,47. In the example, 128 parts of cadmium oxide are dissolved in an aqueous solution of 98 parts of orthophosphoric acid; the solution is evaporated to dryness, and the product dried and pelleted. Over this catalyst a mixture of 3 volumes of steam and 1 volume of acetylene is passed at a temperature of 350 DEG C. and a space velocity of 100 reciprocal hours. The reaction gases are cooled, and the condensate distilled, yielding 2 parts of acetaldehyde to 1 of crotonaldehyde. Specifications 154,579, 320,362, and 332,635, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to.
