Abstract

A process for the vapour phase catalytic oxidation of olefins to aliphatic dicarboxylic acid anhydrides comprises passing a gaseous mixture comprising oxygen and an olefin at a temperature between 250 DEG and 700 DEG C. over a catalyst which comprises a complex of oxides of molybdenum, vanadium and phosphorus, in which the molybdenum, vanadium and phosphorus are present in the atomic ratios MO : V : P : : 8 to 11 : 2 to 4 : 0.8 to 1.1, coated on a silica gel carrier which has been prepared by the hydrolysis of a tetra-alkyl orthosilicate, e.g. tetraethyl orthosilicate. Useful olefins are those containing from 4 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. but-1-ene, but-2-ene and 3-methylbut-1-ene; olefinically unsaturated refinery by-products obtained in the production of gasoline may also be used. The oxygen used may be pure or in admixture with an inert gas, such as nitrogen or helium; dry air is preferably employed. The process may be carried out in multiple tube heat exchanger-type reactors. The anhydrides produced may be recovered by direct condensation or by quenching with water to form the corresponding dicarboxylic acid which is then dehydrated to produce the anhydride. In the examples, but-2-ene is oxidized to maleic anhydride which is recovered by absorption in water and subsequent dehydration of the acid solution produced.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst comprises a complex of oxides of molybdenum, vanadium and phosphorus, in which the molybdenum, vanadium and phosphorus are present in the atomic ratios Mo:V:P::8 to 11:2 to 4:0,8 to 1,1, coated on a silica gel carrier which has been prepared by the hydrolysis of a tetra-alkyl orthosilicate, e.g. tetraethyl orthosilicate. The catalyst may be prepared by adding suitably obtained silica gel to an aqueous solution of ammonium heptamolybdate, ammonium metavanadate and orthophosphoric acid, present in appropriate proportions, heating the mixture to dryness over a steam bath and, if desired, pressing into pellets. The catalyst may be used in fixed or fluid bed systems and is employed for oxidizing olefins to acid anhydrides (see Division C2).
